Two stories are competing for the top line this month: on the ALTA side, new research reveals that fraud prevention and information security remain the hardest parts of best practices compliance for title agencies of all sizes. ALTA Best Practices: Fraud Prevention Remains the Hardest Pillar

The August 2026 TitleNews magazine cover story examines new research on the challenges title companies face in implementing and maintaining ALTA’s Best Practices framework. The findings are consistent across firm size: information security, fraud prevention, vendor management, and operational requirements continue to create significant hurdles. The average title insurance fraud or forgery claim now costs more than $143,000 – making compliance not just a regulatory obligation but a financial imperative.

What ALTA's updated Best Practices recommend

● Stronger identity verification at closing – including additional training for staff handling high-risk transactions.
● Tighter controls over notary and signing agent selection, with documented protocols for responding to suspected fraud.

ALTA 49 and 49.1 Endorsements - Post-Policy Deed Fraud Coverage

Following the June 2026 endorsement announcement, the ALTA 49 and ALTA 49.1 endorsements are now in active deployment across title firms. The ALTA 49 endorsement provides coverage for loss or damage resulting from a forged deed or mortgage recorded after the policy date – specifically when the insured homeowner was impersonated as the grantor.
