ALTA Expands Title Insurance Protection Against Deed Fraud
June 23, 2026 – ALTA announced expanded endorsements that extend title insurance protection against deed fraud and forgery. Just days earlier, on June 18, the FBI issued a formal warning about rising vacant land seller impersonation scams. For surveyors and drafters working on ALTA/NSPS surveys, this underscores the increasing legal and reputational stakes of survey accuracy.
2026 ALTA/NSPS Standards: Four Months In – What’s Working, What’s Not
The 2026 ALTA/NSPS Minimum Standard Detail Requirements went live on February 23, 2026. Firms are now well into implementation. On June 4, Partner Engineering & Science released its 2026 Guide to ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys to help commercial real estate professionals navigate the updated standards. Here is where the friction points lie:
The big shift in records research responsibility
● The title insurer is no longer required to provide copies of adjoining property deeds. That responsibility now falls on the surveyor. This means new workflows, new relationships with county records offices, and additional time factored into project scopes.

● Relative Positional Precision (RPP) language is clearer – unambiguous guidance on how boundary precision must be evaluated and communicated.
● Monument documentation requirements now create a traceable evidence trail, making future surveys faster and more defensible.
● New optional Table A, Item 20 allows a summary table flagging observed encroachments across boundary lines, into easements, or setback areas.

ISO 19650 Is Getting a Major Refresh
The BIM world’s governing information management standard – ISO 19650 – is undergoing revisions. Draft updates to Parts 1 and 2 were open for comment earlier this year, with Part 3 available for review around the start of June. Firms working on government or international projects should review the proposed changes now, before they are finalized.
